European Turks: religious behavior and cultural multi-belonging

The Turks in Europe, forts of 2 500 000 people from now on, of all citizenships, form a significant group within the European union in spite of multiple faces and multiple modes and strategies of membership.

This population is one of the Turkish communities of Europe which suffers more of the debates which shake the European public opinions about Turkish integration in the European Union. The French debate is particularly an essentialist one and is directed more towards the "turkishness" then towards Turkey.

In such a context the Turks of Europe are in a step of double difficult legitimating: the legitimating of living and existing in Europe as "Turks" but a also legitimating of living and existing in Europe as "Muslims".

This last step supports particularly on the specificity of Islam and the manners of being Moslem from Turkey vis-à-vis the other cultural or sociological Muslims of Europe.

Global Justice, Freedom of Movement and Democratic Citizenship

The article discusses three liberal arguments about freedom of movement: immigration as a remedy for global injustice in the distribution of opportunities, freedom of movement as an integral aspect of individual autonomy, and immigration control as implied in democratic self-determination and citizenship. The article shows how these apparently irreconcilable stances can be reconstructed as partially overlapping once we realize that liberal citizenship provides not only reasons for closure but entails a bundle of mobility rights and is open for access by migrant stakeholders.

Keywords: Citizenship, freedom of movement, global justice, democratic boundary problem, membership criteria, stakeholder principle
