Syracuse University in Florence welcomes spring 2009 students. We are particularly excited because we are celebrating the 50th year of SU in Florence. From thirty study abroad students in 1959, SUF generally has between 300-370 undergraduate enrollments each semester.

The spring 2009 semester kicks off with the arrival of students on Tuesday, January 13. Thus begins the traditional flurry of orientation activities: welcome dinners, registration, housing, permits of stay, internships, and work study applications. SUF Director Barbara Deimling encourages students to hit the ground running and work with faculty and staff to get their semester off to a smooth start. “Students can capitalize on their semester abroad in many ways. We urge them to discover the many resources the school has to offer, especially through SUF’s internship program and the volunteer program, engaging and integrating with the local community.”

SUF will recognize outstanding students through the Academic Excellence Awards, an award ceremony that takes place at the end of the semester during the Student Day celebration.

Says Jim Kauffman, Assistant Director for Student Life, “Students can keep up with events through the SUF website and weekly event emails,” and notes that SUF’s presence on Facebook “is good way to connect with each other and with faculty and staff members.”

The spring semester also sees the arrival of five new FIA graduate students, ready for an intense year of study through the Master of Fine Arts Program devoted to the study of Renaissance art in Italy.

Sums up Deimling: “We are ready for a spring semester continuing the SUF tradition of academic excellence.”
