Introduction to Antique Painting Techniques and Restoration (PTG 300.1)

Introduction to the traditional techniques of easel and wall painting, as practiced in Florence and Tuscany since the 13th century, and problems regarding their conservation and restoration. Through discussions and readings, students are first introduced on a theoretical basis to the mechanisms and materials used for producing such works of art in the past, and are then required to put this information into practice, through the individual reproduction of a portion of a 14th century egg tempera panel painting, and a group project for creating a true fresco on the wall.
