Home Sweet Home
Whether you live with an Italian family or in an apartment, our housing
office will help you make arrangements, and guide you through the process
from beginning to end. Living in Italy should not only be an exciting learning
experience but also an insightful one. We want you to consider Italy your
home away from home.
Homestays or Apartment Living?
All Arts and Science students automatically live in homestays. Due to studio
hours, all Architects and Pre-Architects placed
in apartments unless they opt for a homestay. Studio
Art students are given a choice of either homestay or an apartment,
but apartment living is on an "as available only" basis and is accommodated
on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Jim Kauffman has been SUF’s Assistant Director of Student Life and
Housing Coordinator since 2000. Jim came to Italy with his wife and
two children seventeen years ago. He wanted to give his family a diverse
cultural experience. His family enjoyed living in Florence so much
that they have never left. Jim oversees extracurricular activities
and counseling issues and is responsible for everything related to
student housing.
“Placing students in their appropriate housing is a fundamental part of our program. As 80% of our students live with Italian host families, it gives me a great deal of pride that semester after semester the students rank their homestay experience one of the most significant aspects of studying abroad.”
“Working in the housing office has given me the opportunity to get to know both students and host families. I enjoy being the connective element between two languages and two cultures. Helping people is very important to me!”
