SU Abroad's Code of Student Conduct

Overview
Students on the Syracuse University Abroad (SU Abroad) programs, whether originally from Syracuse or not, must abide by the Syracuse University (SU) Code of Student Conduct. The code is detailed in the SU Abroad Handbook and often in the handbooks distributed at orientations abroad.

Examples of violations may include but are not limited to:

  1. Abuse behavior
  2. Conduct that leads to harm to oneself or others
  3. Damage to property
  4. Violation of housing rules with host families or in apartments arranged by SU
  5. Violation of hotel rules during orientation, field study seminars or course related field trips
  6. Disorderly conduct and/or public intoxication
  7. Use of or distribution of illegal drugs

Sanctions
Students who violate the Code of Student Conduct will be subject to different levels of sanctions in accordance with the seriousness of the violation. The levels are:

  1. Warning

In instances of less serious deviation from the SU norms of conduct, the student will be formally warned in a letter from the on site program director of the possible consequences of continuing such behavior.

  1. Disciplinary reprimand

This action is a formal admonition by the on site program director on behalf of SU Abroad, and is intended to clearly document that a student’s behavior has been deemed unacceptable. Continued poor behavior could lead to disciplinary probation or expulsion from the program.

A copy of the letter issued by the program director for Syracuse students will be sent to the SU Abroad executive director and the Judicial Affairs office. For students from other colleges and universities a copy of the letter will be sent to the SU Abroad executive director and the study abroad office

Students must meet with a staff member for counseling and may be required to do community service (restorative punishment) and/or write a research paper.

  1. SU Abroad disciplinary probation

This action constitutes a change in status between good standing and suspension or expulsion from the SU Abroad program. The student is allowed to remain enrolled in the SU Abroad program with restrictions. Further violations may lead to immediate suspension or expulsion from the program and perhaps the university.

The student must have a series of meetings with appropriate staff, do community service (restorative punishment), and/or write a research paper related to the violation.

A copy of the letter issued by the on site program director in consultation with the SU Abroad executive director will be sent to the Judicial Affairs office for Syracuse students and to the study abroad office for students from other colleges and universities.

  1. Suspension or termination from the SU Abroad program

The SU Abroad executive director may suspend or terminate a student’s participation in the SU Abroad program in the event that student fails to comply with the program Conditions of Participation or other Syracuse University policies and procedures, or if SU Abroad believes that the student’s participation poses a danger to the student or others or threatens to impede orderly conduct of the SU Abroad programs. Such suspension or termination is in addition to, and not in lieu of, disciplinary action that may be imposed by Syracuse University or the student’s home institution pursuant to applicable policies and procedures.

Concluding comment
SU Abroad is committed to fundamental fairness to the student in applying sanctions because of violations of the student code of conduct.
