Grading Policies

The SUF Academic Internship Program organizes for-credit internships only. A final grade for the internship, assigned by your faculty supervisor, will appear on your transcripts. This grade will reflect not only the quality of work carried out, but also your ability to respect deadlines and demonstrate general reliability and accountability.

To this end, it is the student’s responsibility to:

  1. submit the Independent Study Proposal form to the Internship Office by the second week of the internship. The internship cannot be approved for credit without this form.
  2. keep a time sheet and complete the required number of hours for the internship (1 cr.=45 hrs.; 2 cr.=90 hrs.; 3 cr.=135 hrs.) Please note that travel time must be considered in addition to on-site work hours. You will be given a time sheet to keep track of the hours dedicated to your internship. The time sheet must be signed by your site supervisor and handed into your faculty supervisor together with your final paper or project at the end of the semester.
  3. complete all assignments agreed upon with the faculty and site supervisors. Failure to do so may result in an ‘F’ for the internship.
  4. respect all commitments with the site supervisor. If you are unable to report for work, you must notify the site supervisor immediately. Every unexcused absence will lower your final grade by one third of a letter grade (i.e. from A to A-).
  5. respect all commitments with the faculty supervisor and initiate and maintain contact on a regular basis as determined at the beginning of the internship. Failure to do so may lower your final grade.
  6. respond to the program coordinator’s midterm letter requesting progress feedback. Failure to do so may result in an “F” for the internship.
  7. follow the proper procedures for withdrawing from an internship (if necessary) regardless of motives. In the case of particularly poor performance, and in agreement with the host organization, Syracuse University in Florence may require a student to withdraw from an internship. Failure to complete the necessary paperwork to drop an internship may result in an ‘F’ on your transcripts (see withdrawal policy on back).

Upon request SUF will release a certificate to any student who has successfully completed an internship. Furthermore, a maximum of three interns may receive special recognition from Director Barbara Deimling as Outstanding Interns at the final Student Day ceremony.
