Scuola Primaria “Niccolò Acciaioli” - model building
“Acciaioli” is an elementary school in Florence where children learn basic techniques in drawing and model-building. The intern assists with teaching some basic design and drawing principles, and the project will culminate with each student creating an architectural model. The intern is required to meet with the teacher to plan lessons, and must have completed at least four semesters of architectural history and one semester of studio.

ART HISTORY

Ars et Fides (Florentine Churches) - Spring Only
Ars et Fides is a volunteer organization which offers free guided tours of some of  the most important Florentine churches. The aim is to provide tourists with a deeper understanding of the religious and conceptual background of the church’s history in addition to its artistic and architectural importance. The intern may give tours of Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo), Santa Croce, Santa Maria Novella or San Lorenzo. He/she must be available to work on a regular basis from 10:30-12:00 a.m. or 3:00-5:00 p.m. twice a week. All information necessary to conduct the tours in English is provided by the organization.

Il Battistero
Il Battistero (Florence’s Baptistery) houses impressive mosaics and other artwork from Byzantine to Renaissance times. The intern gives guided tours of the Baptistery to English-speaking visitors. All information necessary to conduct the tours is provided by the host organization.

The Biblioteca degli Uffizi is a prestigious research library that focuses on works of art exhibited in state museums in Florence, including the adjacent Uffizi Gallery. The intern works on projects such as preparing auction-house catalogues and verifying data in the library's on-line catalogue. Good organizational skills and some background in art history are required.

The Frittelli Art Gallery is one of the most important galleries of contemporary art in Florence. The gallery has recently been renovated to include more space for solo exhibitions, new rooms for private collections and a multimedia auditorium for conferences. Interns may assist the gallery owners with setting up exhibits, promoting the gallery among the general public, and managing correspondence between the gallery owners and artists who have participated in past exhibitions. Museo Bellini
The Bellini family is a dynasty of Antique dealers whose private collection is now on display in the family palace. Interns have the unique opportunity of working among paintings, sculptures and objects ranging from the 14th to the 18th century. Work includes cataloguing and filing old photographs of works of art and/or organizing and preparing small group visits to the museum collection. Recommended for Students in History of Art.

The Associazione Museo dei Ragazzi offers guided tours of the secret passages and optical illusion rooms of Palazzo Vecchio to tourists and visitors. In the early part of the internship the intern receives training to give the tours and then in the second phase conducts the tours. The intern must be able to dedicate at least 10 hours a week, therefore the internship is only available for a minimum of 2 credits (90 hours for the semester). Opificio delle Pietre Dure
For centuries the Opificio delle Pietre Dure was a workshop for the artistic production of semiprecious stones founded by Ferdinand I de’ Medici in 1588. Today its modern facilities host a conservation workshop, a school of restoration and a museum, where an impressive collection of artifacts from semi-precious stones is displayed. As part of the museum’s efforts to make itself better known among international visitors and residents of Florence, the intern will assist the museum director with building contacts with cultural associations and English-language publications in and around Florence. SUF Art Gallery
The SUF Art Gallery is dedicated to promoting intercultural exchange through exhibitions of art, providing an enlarged context for academic activity within the university and possibilities for collaboration with the larger community. The purpose is to create a dynamic space where artists and students interact, engendering high-quality exhibits and public programming. Each semester the gallery offers, on average, two exhibits. The intern will assist the Exhibits Coordinator in all aspects of running the gallery, including exhibit installations, gallery promotion and research projects for future exhibits. Florence TV/Web TV
Florence TV is a local television station in Florence that seeks broadcasting students to assist in the production and final cut editing of video clips about Florence for broadcast on their web TV. Students will make their own video clips about Florence and Italy participating in the entire production process from start to finish. Students will also do editing for an online column called “USA chiama Italia.” Eligible students should have some broadcasting experience, either theoretical or practical, and demonstrate initiative, creativity and reliability in their work.

The Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco is a private foundation whose mission is to promote intercultural dialogue among different countries, with special emphasis on East/West relations, and to promote an awareness of cultural heritages and diversities among young people. Accademica Teatrale di Firenze: Laboratorio Teatrale
The Accademia Teatrale di Firenze conducts theater classes and workshops for children and teenagers, ages seven to nineteen. All classes are conducted in Italian. The intern assists in leading theatrical games, exercises, and other activities while gaining familiarity with characteristically Italian techniques and traditions in theater, such as the use of masks and “gestural vocabulary.” In the spring semester the intern helps organize the yearend performance. Experience with theatrical performance and production is required.

Florence International Theater Compnay
The Florence International Theater Company (FITC) is an international, English speaking theatre company in Florence that seeks to create a renaissance of  theatrical tradition in Florence while reflecting the city’s international status. FITC develops an approach to performance that brings together the techniques of American and Italian Theatre, creating works of art primarily in English and sharing these with the Tuscan community. Internships are available in the following areas: 
 1) Stage Management: The intern assists the stage manager in every aspect of his/her work, attending performances and rehearsals. Ideal for Drama students.
 2) Theatre Management: The intern is involved in the technical management of the theatre, such as managing the box office, supervising volunteers, and handling ticket sales. Recommended for Management or Drama students.

EDUCATION

American Language Center
The American Language Center of Florence was founded in 1959 to offer insight into North American language and culture. Today it is the largest American language center in Tuscany. Classes are made up of Italians of all ages and occupations. Internships consist of presenting short talks to classes on one or more topics of choice related to contemporary American life (i.e. the American education system, sports, pop culture, etc.) or to the intern’s own life in the U.S. Talks are followed by question and answer periods with the students.  Most classes are held Monday through Thursday after 5:00 p.m., and the center operates on a trimester system: October-December, January-March and April-June. Interns must be outgoing and have good communication skills.

Elementary Schools

The elementary school intern works with a class of 20-25 children ages 6 to 10 assisting the teacher with classroom activities in English. In some cases the intern creates and carries out her/his own program, in others s/he follows that of the teacher. In both cases the intern is encouraged to share traditional American games, songs and folklore with the class. Recommended for students of education and the performing arts, but open to anyone enthusiastic about working with children. Available for IPA credit only.

High Schools

The high school intern works with one or more classes of 25-30 students, ages 15 to 19, leading in-class discussions, games or other activities in English. Recommended for students of education, psychology, communications or the performing arts, but open to anyone enthusiastic about working with young people. Available for IPA credit only.

English Cemetery
The English Cemetery is an important historical and memorial site in Florence. Many renowned English and American expatriates are buried there - among them, the great poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, as well as other writers and intellectuals. The intern will assist the cemetery's curator, Sister Julia Holloway, with the project "Adopt a Tomb," doing research on the various tombs and assisting Sister Julia in developing a “friends” network to ensure financial support to preserve this historical patrimony. In so doing the intern will gain a deeper understanding of the international writers' community present in Florence in the 19th century. Suitable for history or literature students. May also be suitable for PR or communications students.

Mediateca Regionale Toscana
Mediateca Regionale Toscana is an audiovisual communications center which houses approx. 11,000 films and a collection of over 8,000 books on film and cinematography in Tuscany. The library is used by critics, students and film buffs alike. In addition to producing audiovisual materials, the library promotes educational and cultural events related to film and cinema in the region of Tuscany. One or two interns each semester will assist staff with organizing upcoming festivals and events and may also be asked to help with digital cataloguing, organizing archives and translating from Italian into English for the Mediateca’s website. Preference will be given to students who can dedicate at least an entire morning or afternoon a week and/or an occasional Friday.

Florence English Speaking Theatrical Artists (FESTA) is a bilingual and multicultural group of theatre professionals and interdisciplinary artists in Florence, dedicated to creating a new bi-cultural theatre model in Florence. The founders are American women, but the company is made up of artists from Italy, America, England, Ireland and other countries. The company seeks business interns with a background in marketing and publicity. Interns will need to determine how best to advertise and expand its target audience and find local websites, radio stations, stores and newspapers in which to advertise. A marketing and publicity intern could also help in designing a strategy and calendar for FESTA’s marketing plan.

The Fondazione Romualdo Del Bianco is a private foundation whose mission is to promote intercultural dialogue among different countries, with special emphasis on East/West relations, and to promote an awareness of cultural heritages and diversities among young people. The Bottega del Cioccolato is a small business that specializes in making quality chocolate products. The intern assists with the complete production process, learning about the history of chocolate in Italian culture, how cocoa is cultivated, processed and marketed throughout the world and the range of products that can be created. The intern must have at least two 4-hour blocks of time available a week (i.e. 9:30-1:30 or 2:30-6:30), thereby concentrating a 40-hour internship into a 5-week period.

De Gustibus
The De Gustibus association was created to develop sustainable wine and food tourism projects, supporting small agricultural farmers, safeguarding and protecting the environment with thematic itineraries including bicycle, horse, and automobile excursions and by promoting traditional Italian agriculture. The student must be available to work two afternoons a week from 3:00-7:00 pm, or mornings from 9:30-1:30.

Enoteca Bonatti (Wine-Tasting Shop)
The Enoteca Bonatti, founded in 1934, is a wine-tasting shop renowned for its professionalism, customer service and quality wines. Every Thursday at 6:00 p.m. the shop organizes free tastings of Italian and international wines. The intern will learn about wine culture and product marketing. He/she will learn to acquire the vocabulary specific to the industry from the first phases of production (the cellar) to the final product (the bottle and its content), as well as how and when wine should be drunk responsibly. Perche’ No! Ice Cream Shop
“Perche’ No!” is the oldest ice cream shop in Florence. It opened in 1939 in Via dei Tavolini, the heart of Florence’s historic district. Since its inception the shop has given primary importance to the quality and freshness of the ingredients used, to conserving the tradition of homemade ice cream production and to rediscovering original recipes of past generations. Vestri Cioccolato is a family owned and run producer of quality chocolate products with branches in Florence and Arezzo. The intern assists with the complete production process, including the preparation of ice cream products using only natural ingredients. The internship familiarizes students with the cultivation and processing of cocoa beans, as well as with the value of chocolate in Italy’s gastronomic culture.

ARCI TOSCANA (Associazione Ricreativa e Culturale Italiana)
ARCI is a nation-wide cultural association, active in all areas of civil
society. This internship allows students to get first hand knowledge of some of the most important issues in social and political life in Italy. The Tuscan Section of ARCI focuses on projects related to Educazione alla Legalita' (Education for Legality: advocacy against the Mafia and organized crime) and Immigration (offering legal aid to migrant workers). Interns will work on one of these projects, helping to promote the association’s activities and organize specific events. Primarily suited to Political Science or Sociology students.

Centro UNESCO di Firenze
Centro UNESCO di Firenze is the Florence chapter of the worldwide organization whose acronym stands for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Europe Direct Firenze provides local residents with information about the European Union. The agency is located in the Palazzo Vecchio, seat of the city council of Florence. The Intern researches EU websites and publications for up-to-date information on European laws and regulations. S/he may be asked to participate in the organization of special events (lectures, seminars) aimed at increasing public awareness of European issues in Florence or to write a report on the European Union. The Forum is a non-governmental organization that aims to further public awareness and debate on issues of war and peace. It is an independent scientific institution made up of experts from various disciplines, mainly professors of the University of Florence and of other Italian universities. Istituto Storico della Resistenza in Toscana (ISRT)
The ISRT is an institute for historical research that promotes the study of the Anti-Fascist and Resistance movement as well as a greater understanding of contemporary European and Italian history through its documentary archive and library consisting of more than 50,000 books and 2,500 periodicals. The institute also organizes training courses for teachers and students. SUF Media Lab Digital Imaging & Mapping
The intern uses digital photography (including panoramic) and CAD mapping techniques to graphically document Florence and other cities in Italy. S/he is responsible for obtaining permission from public and private entities to take measurements and photograph on site. Once permission has been obtained the intern shoots, processes and catalogues the images. For FIA or IPA credit.

SUF Photography Studio
The intern photographs special events and activities which take place at SUF during the semester: lectures, field trips, exhibits, student activities, theater workshops, etc. Photos used for SUF publications will be credited in the intern’s name. The student must own his/her own camera (preferably digital) with flash capabilities. S/he must be skilled in taking indoor photos using flash and under natural lighting and be available to do shoots outside of regular class times. The Frittelli Art Gallery is one of the most important galleries of contemporary art in Florence. The gallery has recently been renovated to include more space for solo exhibitions, new rooms for private collections and a multimedia auditorium for conferences. Interns may assist the gallery owners with setting up exhibits, promoting the gallery among the general public, and managing correspondence between the gallery owners and artists who have participated in past exhibitions. Recommended for Studio Arts and Art History majors.

Every semester SUF holds an exhibition of selected work from students enrolled in studio art classes for both the SUF community and the general public. The intern learns about preparing for such an extensive exhibition including organizing the event, displaying the work and communicating the event to the community. The intern must be able to dedicate ample time to the project towards the end of the semester.

SUF ‘Zine Magazine
The SUF ‘Zine is a publication which highlights the creative life of students during their stay at SUF and is distributed to the entire SUF community at the end of each semester. The intern acts as editor-in-chief of the ‘Zine as well as graphic designer for lay-out. He/she is responsible for all decisions regarding the publication, such as determining which aspects of the creative life at SUF should be published, soliciting contributions and presenting the publication to the community. It is highly recommended that the intern be computer literate and have a basic understanding of graphics management and lay-out programs such as InDesign and Photoshop. Schedule is flexible.
