Library

The dissemination of knowledge is one of the cornerstones of civilization.
John F. Budd

SUF’s expanding collection of over 12,000 items is one of the largest of any U.S. study abroad program in Italy. Books, videos and journals are carefully chosen to support the curriculum, ensuring that students find the most appropriate resources for their studies right on campus.

The SUF library is more than a place to consult and check out books. The library provides facilities for watching DVDs and videocassettes individually (in the audio-visual room) and in small groups (in the teatrino). Five well lit modernly furnished consultation rooms with wireless Internet access provide a bright and pleasant atmosphere for studying. A photocopier and scanner (scans onto USB flash drives) is available for student use on the bottom floor of the library building (the Villino).

Who’s Who in the Library

“For a Londoner living in a Latin culture, working at SUF Library gives me the best of both worlds. The results can be amazing!”

Carol Estall
Circulation Manager
caestall@syr.fi.it

Carol is originally from London and has been living in Florence since the mid 1970s. She has worked at SUF since 1985 and began working in the library in 1993. Carol played a central role in getting the entire library catalogue on-line. She has extensive knowledge not only of the library collection but also of the city of Florence and the Italian language and culture.

“I feel that a university library should be a cultural center of an academic program. It is important to use the library’s resources and combine them with the human resources on campus to contribute to the life of the campus and to complement a student’s study abroad experience.”
