Option III Program: Study at the Universita’ degli Studi di Firenze

SUF’s Option III program is the right choice for students who enjoy the challenge of taking classes entirely in Italian at the prestigious Universita’ degli Studi di Firenze. This program officially began in 1991 when a cultural agreement was signed with the University of Florence allowing SUF students to enroll in a wide variety of courses in the Schools of Humanities (Facolta’ di Lettere e filosofia) and Political Science (Facolta’ di Scienza Politiche). Taking classes with Italian students and experiencing a completely diverse academic environment allows students to engage completely in the Italian community and culture.

Option III was a necessary challenge because I was able to expand my boundaries… I have changed and matured living on my own in Italy, away from the inevitable American college routine.

Admission Requirements
Students must have studied Italian for at least 4 semesters or the equivalent and must have acquired a good command of the language.
Qualified students will be admitted based on their academic record, recommendation by a current Italian instructor, an essay and an interview in Italian upon their arrival in Florence.
Please refer to SU Abroad’s Admissions Policy for more information.

Course Information
Students may enroll in up to three corsi singoli in selected departments of the two Facolta’.
The academic coordinator, Prof. Antonella Francini will meet with students individually to advise them on their course selection.
Each student will be assigned an academic Italian tutor, a scholar selected purposely to guide SUF students through the semester, helping them prepare for class and for the final exams.
Courses typically end with a final oral exam.
Courses are usually worth 5 credits (including classroom contact hours and 25 hours with the academic tutor).
Students can choose to combine Option III courses with Option I courses offered at the SUF campus and/or with Option II courses offered at the Centro di Cultura per Stanieri.
